Virtual summer reading program begins at Lee libraries
The Lee County Library System has launched its 2020 summer reading program for all ages, with a completely online program that encourages participants to explore their imagination through reading and learning adventures.
The program incorporates a variety of educational activities and reading challenges, many of which can be completed offline and screen-free, with participants logging activity either through the website or the READsquared mobile app.
Age-appropriate weekly missions built into the program encourage creativity, imagination, activity and exploration themed on a variety of interests. A bingo-style challenge for adults encourages the use of library resources and rewards participants’ love of reading and learning. Participants earn points and unlock games and badges as they progress through the program, with numerous chances to earn great prizes along the way. The last day to log books and activities and to be eligible for the prize drawings is Aug. 1.
Free activity books are also available for families that wish to unplug for the summer or would like an additional reading challenge. Downloadable copies of the activity booklet can be printed from the library website or patrons can pick up a free, printed copy at any library branch using the Contactless Curbside Pickup service, while supplies last.
Patrons are also encouraged to watch weekly online storytimes provided on the Library’s YouTube channel and to register for free, online programs for kids offered each week throughout the summer. Other programming is planned, so check back with the library’s social media and website for the most current information.
Reading over the summer break can help prevent summer learning loss and keep kids on track for the upcoming school year. Early literacy activities for babies and preschoolers develop critical pre-reading skills for younger children, and adults are encouraged to model positive reading behavior for their kids while getting in on the fun as well. The summer reading program’s purpose is to spark curiosity in even the most reluctant reader by offering activities and reading challenges that are fun and engaging.
